2021 Fall Show

September 25th – October 30th

CLA Best of Show Winner – Fall 2020
“Bourdain’s Curbside Service to Go” by Suzann Waggoner

2021 Fall Show Judge Holly Laws

Holly Laws is a sculptor who makes objects and multimedia installations. Her approach is informed by a love of experimentation with all manner of materials and processes. She employs labor-intensive and time-consuming techniques that are often associated with craft, a specific trade, or women’s work, as opposed to fine art. Laws received a BFA in Sculpture from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, and an MFA in Sculpture from Tyler School of Art, Temple University in Philadelphia. She moved to Arkansas in 2008 for a faculty position at the University of Central Arkansas, and currently teaches classes in Three-Dimensional Design, Contemporary Media, and Sculpture. She lives in Mayflower with her two cats, and seven chickens, including Beatrice, pictured above.

In Person Meetings

We decided as a board to propone the September meeting due to the current increase of Covid cases. Although we are looking forward to meeting again as a group, we want to ensure everyone’s safely comes first. We hope to start in-person meetings in October and will announce all the details as it gets closer to that time.
We will still have our Fall Show drop-off as planned, Sept. 25th at the library from 1pm-4pm. Thank you for your patient and understanding.

Did you know…

In 1974 there were 5 artists in the Conway League of Artists, who were watercolor and oil painters.  Through the years, we have added many more members who were gouache and acrylic painters along with many mixed media artists.  We had pencil, charcoal and pastel artists.  We also had sculptors in stone, metal and assemblage.  We had collage artists, photographers, and even d a bonsai artist. We now have 75 members-and we are very diverse!!

Early meetings were held at the Snow Art Center at UCA?  Is that the present Baum Gallery?  Then the Salem Methodist Church hosted the League meetings until April of 1997 when the League moved to the Faulkner County Library.  Notes also indicate the no meetings were held in January and February due to the threat of snow!  Can that be true?

History

In the beginning, there were 5 young women who loved to paint. They would get together to paint and critique each other’s work. Later, they decided to form a club, The Brush & Palette Club. Their rules were simple. Dues were $10 a year and all members should participate in two shows a year. They had a Chairperson, Correspondence-Secretary and Treasurer, who were elected every year and two other members.

Their purpose was to bring together individuals in the community who had an active interest in painting. The artists must be willing to combine their talents, in the various capacities to which they were individually suited, to be of greatest value to one another and to the club.

In 1973, the Brush & Palette Club became the Conway League of Artists. Their interest was still to bring together individuals who had an active interest in producing visual art. The League sponsored workshops, programs about art, group critique and art exhibits to improve artist’s skills and build confidence.

In 1976, a scholarship fund was established at the University Of Central Arkansas (UCA) for an art student. The funding would be supported by the League. They raffled a donated painting, by one of the members every month and the money from this raffle would be given to the UCA Fund. UCA would select an art student to whom the money was given to be used to purchase art supplies. UCA refers to this fund as the Dorris Curtis Fund and it is awarded to a senior student in the fall and spring semester.

For over the last forty years, the Conway League of Artists has given to over 80 students, who are pursuing an art career.

In summary, members of the Conway League of Artists are still willing to combine their talents, to be of greatest value to one another, still support the scholarship fund, the club and the community.
